According to the Telegraph, Derby County are rivalling Preston North End for Luton Town striker James Collins who is available on a free transfer this summer.

Collins has been in fine form for Luton, hitting double figures for two seasons straight.

The 30-year-old, however, is out of contract at Kenilworth Road this summer and his situation has alerted the attention of several clubs keen to bring him in.

The Telegraph claim Derby and Preston are among those vying for his signature.

The Rams are among the lowest scorers in the Championship this season, and their lack of goals sees them in a scrap for survival with only eight games remaining.

Colin Kazim-Richards tops Derby’s scoring charts with just seven goals.

Jack Marriott, meanwhile, is out on loan at Sheffield Wednesday while Martyn Waghorn’s future is up in the air after scoring just three league goals all season.

Waghorn’s contract at Pride Park expires this summer, and the £5 million signing was recently dropped from Derby’s match-day squad for unprofessional behaviour.

Rams boss Wayne Rooney will certainly need to sign a striker or two this summer.

Collins began his career at Aston Villa before having spells in the lower leagues prior to joining Luton in 2017. He has since scored over 60 goals for the Hatters.

Luton boss Nathan Jones dubbed him a ‘brilliant’ striker in a recent interview for Luton Today, while his rise has seen Collins become a full Republic of Ireland international.

With Derby and Preston likely to be working with tight finances this summer, signing the 6ft 2inch striker on a free could turn out to be fantastic business for either side.
