New signing Graeme Shinnie says Derby County’s 4-2 playoff victory over Leeds United at Elland Road was one of the best games he has ever seen, the club’s official website report.
It was one of the best games I’ve watched in a long time and I thought Derby played so well in the game. I’m excited for the Play-Off Final but watching those sorts of games have given me a real buzz and I can’t wait for the opportunity to get in and amongst it. There is no better feeling than watching the celebrations and I just wanted to be in amongst it and be part of it. It has given me the extra hunger and excitement for joining up with the team.
How Derby County overcame the odds to beat Leeds United:
Derby County reached the playoff final having overcome the odds at Elland Road. Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, the Rams came from 1-0 down on the night to defeat Leeds 4-2. Jack Marriott was Derby’s hero as he scored twice, leaving Elland Road stunned.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side had beaten Derby three times this season already. When Leeds opened the scoring and took a 2-0 aggregate lead, many thought that was the tie done and dusted.
Frank Lampard’s side, however, have shown their ability to come back this season. Twice they trailed Southampton 2-0 in the FA Cup before progressing. And Norwich City supporters witnessed heartbreak at Carrow Road as Derby came from behind to win 4-3 in Norfolk in December.
Aston Villa will be Derby’s opponents at Wembley in the Championship final. Dean Smith’s have already beaten the Rams twice this season, 3-0 and 4-0. But dismissing the Rams now would be foolish.
Shinnie is set to join Derby this summer when his contract expires at Aberdeen. The Scotland international has all the necessary attributes to play for the Rams. Moreover, he could be about to join a Premier League club.
