Derby County club name

Derby County have kept the name since their inception in 1884; however, that was never the planned name for the club. Instead, there was the idea to be called ‘Derbyshire County FC’, which would then cover the whole county rather than the City of Derby.

However, it was deemed to be too long of a name by the Derbyshire FA. They also wanted to avoid confusion over it being a team for the FA themselves.

Founded as: Derby County F.C. (1884-Present)

Nickname: The Rams

Derby County’s founding year

Derby County, like many football clubs, had actually started as a result of the local county’s cricket team. In 1884, Derbyshire County Cricket Club started Derby County Football Club as a way to keep busy during the winter months while attaining extra income.

Derby’s games have been hosted at Pride Park Stadium, which was newly built upon its opening in 1997 and unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II. The Rams have had three stadiums in their history, which holds the record for being the only club to have full England internationals play at all three of their grounds.

While the Baseball Ground saw much of their success, with two First Division titles in the 1970s and an FA Cup much earlier, Pride Park has seen a fair few bright days. While most recently there have been some struggles, there will be hope of adding plenty of pride back into Pride Park.
