Derby County manager Phillip Cocu has told RamsTV he is doubtful Jack Marriott will be fit to play against Hull City after picking up a minor muscle injury.

The former Peterborough United striker was a menace in the 2-1 win over Barnsley. He scored the opening goal and, on another day, could have netted at least two more.

But Marriott’s fitness issues again caught up with him. The striker was absent for the trip to Middlesbrough, and Derby desperately missed him as they struggled in attack.

Phillip Cocu had to change system at Boro, and Derby rescued a 2-2 draw in the end.

Speaking to RamsTV, Cocu admits he is doubtful Marriott will play against Hull next week.

Jack has a minor muscle injury. Hopefully he can make it for Hull next Saturday. It’s doubtful, but let’s hope Jack can make it because he did well in the last game he played against Barnsley, but he couldn’t be with the squad for Middlesbrough.

Jack Marriott offers Derby something unique in the final third.

Marriott is a renowned goal scorer. He is regarded by many supporters to be the best finisher at Derby, despite only netting two Championship goals this season.

But what Marriott does offer the Rams is a different proposition upfront. He plays on the shoulder, makes runs in behind and down the channels, stretching the defence.

Derby lacked his presence against Boro on Saturday. Forwards Martyn Waghorn and Tom Lawrence dropped deep, allowing Boro to push up and dominate the midfield.

With Phillip Cocu wanting his side to play out, without a runner in behind it often becomes too congested. Derby struggle to get out, inviting pressure on themselves.

Marriott could be a big miss against a Hull side who are pushing for a top six spot.
