According to FourFourTwo, Derby County could be about to hire one of the world’s best managers in Phillip Cocu.
Derby have identified the Dutchman as their number one target to replace Frank Lampard. Sky Sports claims Chelsea should announce Lampard’s arrival within the next 48 hours.
Derby will do well to make a swift appointment, especially one as impressive as Cocu.
Renowned magazine FourFourTwo rated the former PSV Eindhoven coach as the 19th best in the world in 2018. They rate Cocu higher than three-time Premier League winner Jose Mourinho and current PSG boss Thomas Tuchel.
Such accolades goes to strengthen the belief that Derby could be about to pull off a major coup. Cocu, a former Barcelona midfielder, won three Eredivsie titles in five years at PSV before leaving for Fenerbahce.
It is suggested Cocu’s ability to work with young players is a major factor in Derby’s pursuit. Owner Mel Morris seems keen to appoint another high-profile manager, and the benefits which comes with it.
Cocu only managed a fourth-place finish in his debut campaign as PSV boss. However, after some fine recruitment and excellent coaching, he went on to guide the club to three league titles in the following four seasons.
Assuming he gets the job at Pride Park, Derby supporters should be patient and look at Norwich City as the example to follow.
German manager Daniel Farke joined the Canaries in 2017, but only managed a 14th place finish in his first season. Yet, after a full summer transfer window and the use of their excellent academy, Norwich romped to the Championship title last season, scoring 93 goals.
