Derby County made a number of changes to the team that faced Barrow in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

One of those switches from the team that fell to defeat against Watford was the introduction of youngster Tawanda Chirewa.

The attacking midfielder, who is capable of playing on the wings, joined on a season-long loan from Premier League outfit Wolves on Monday.

Paul Warne will be hopeful that the 20-year-old can add some quality in the forward areas with a creative spark.

The Derby fans got a bit of a glimpse of what Chiwera can offer on his debut, as well as some room for improvement.

How Tawanda Chirewa performed on Derby County debut

Chirewa was given a start for Derby away against Barrow and showed some signs of promise in that spell on the pitch.

The youngster managed to evade two defenders with an impressive drop of the shoulder, while he found some joy when moving from attacking midfield onto the right flank.

There was a good sign of his physicality as he stayed strong when shoulder barged by the opposition in some instances.

However, Chirewa has some room for improvement, with one opportunity seeing him in plenty of space but unable to pick out a teammate with a cross.

The forward picked up a yellow card for a petulant boot of the ball after committing a foul, which may be costly on another occasion.

Warne decided to withdraw Chirewa at half-time, ending a short but promising debut for the youngster, who may have plenty more to offer.

It remains to be seen how soon the Wolves loan star will be thrown into Championship action for the Rams.

Derby still need transfer options

Despite the addition of Chirewa, Derby are still clearly in need of more transfer options before the end of the transfer window.

The Rams struggled to take care of the ball against Barrow in a match that could and perhaps should’ve been more comfortable.

More options in the defensive, midfield and forward ranks are still needed and could be found by the deadline on Friday.

If not, then Warne could face a long wait for the next opportunity to bolster his squad in the January transfer window.

The Rams host Bristol City in their next clash at Pride Park, where several new faces, including Chirewa, could feature for the team.
