Following months of frustration with the Bin Zayed International group and their failed takeover attempts, it was announced on Wednesday that Mel Morris had reached an agreement with Erik Alonso over the sale of the club to No Limits Sports Limited, subject to EFL approval.

The 29-year-old Spaniard took to social media to make the following statement;

“We are privileged to take ownership of one of the founding members of the Football League and to build a fresh future for the fans, staff and players of Derby County,” he said.

“It has undoubtedly been a difficult period both on and off the pitch for the club over the last two seasons and we recognise that all of the staff have been dedicated and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the club’s first team and academy football operations were fulfilled.

“We are looking forward to working with Wayne Rooney and his team, and will do everything possible to support the club’s vision and ambition.

“We would like to thank Mel Morris and his team for their support in helping to facilitate a quick and smooth transaction.”

Supporters have met the proposed deal with scepticism, many of whom doubt the qualities of Alonso and whether or not he’s fit to run the club.

Some fans, however, are trying to look on the brighter side as best they can.

The Derby faithful are clearly split following the news of Alonso’s proposed takeover, though he made his message to the supporters clear when he posted the following tweet on Wednesday evening.

Only time will tell with this one. Let’s just keep our fingers crossed for now, yeah?
