Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel has taken to Instagram to like Phillip Cocu’s message saluting Derby County’s 2-0 victory over Luton Town.

The Rams boss recorded his third league win since taking over in the summer, and his second successive victory at Pride Park after beating Birmingham City last weekend.

Cocu took to Instagram to send the supporters a message highlighting his side’s great effort.

And among those who liked his comments was Chelsea player Marco van Ginkel.

Could Derby County target a future move for Marco van Ginkel?

Phillip Cocu is evidently a massive fan of Van Ginkel. He managed the player for two years during his two-year loan spell at PSV Eindhoven between 2016-2018.

Van Ginkel was such an important player for the club. He scored 29 goals in 56 games, helping PSV win the 2017-18 Eredivisie league title before returning to Chelsea.

The eight-capped Holland international joined Chelsea in 2013. However, he has played just 97 minutes’ worth of first-team football at Stamford Bridge and is currently out injured.

Chelsea have so many midfield options under former Derby County boss Frank Lampard. Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, Ross Barkley, Mateo Kovacic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Mason Mount and Tiemoue Bakayoko are all central midfielders seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order.

Van Ginkel’s contract expires next summer. The Blues may opt against extending his deal with the player having missed the past 15 months of action with an ACL knee injury.

Could Derby go in for him when his contract expires? Phillip Cocu told The Athletic last month how he keeps in contact with the midfielder, speaking very highly of him.

It would be a massive coup on the Rams’ part if they pulled it off. However, it’s likely they would need promotion to the Premier League under Cocu to make it a realistic option.
