Josh Vickers has been subject to high praise following his performance for Derby County yesterday.

Derby County claimed a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough on home soil, with Vickers’ ‘phenomenal’ display catching the eye.

The goalkeeper made four saves as his potential replacement, Jacob Widell Zetterstrom, sat on the bench after completing his switch the previous day.

Vickers will be eager to battle for his place in between the sticks and certainly hasn’t done himself any harm with his clean sheet against Michael Carrick’s side.

The 28-year-old took to Instagram following the win, sharing a number of photos of the afternoon at Pride Park with the caption: “Up the rams”.

Vickers then received numerous responses on his post, with his teammates all sharing messages of support.

Will Jacob Widell Zetterstrom become No.1?

Vickers hasn’t established himself as a first-choice goalkeeper since he was at Lincoln City during the 2019-20 campaign.

The shot-stopper will rate his chances against Zetterstrom, but it would be surprising if Paul Warne doesn’t bring the Swede in over the coming months.

Derby have been working so hard to sign the 26-year-old this month and he is very highly-rated, having earned his first international cap last year.

Vickers will undoubtedly offer good competition for Zetterstrom, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he decided he wanted to leave in search of regular first-team football if his position is confirmed over the next couple of weeks.

The Rams have also added Rohan Luthra to their ranks this summer, so are no longer light in between the sticks.
