Former Derby County favourite, Richard Keogh, has become a free agent after unexpectedly leaving Wycombe Wanderers prematurely today.
Richard Keogh joined Derby County from Coventry City in 2012 and went onto spend seven years at Pride Park, making over 350 appearances.
The defender spent most of his time with The Rams as their club captain and enjoyed huge success on an individual level.
Keogh won Derby County Player of the Year twice, Players’ Player of the Year three times, as well as also claiming Supporters’ Player of the Year on one occasion. He was also named in the PFA Team of the Year for the 2014-15 season in the Championship.
Keogh eventually left the club after he was ruled out for the 2019-20 season following a car crash, with his contract terminated in October.
The veteran has since played for MK Dons, Huddersfield Town, Blackpool and Ipswich, before joining Wycombe Wanderers in the summer.
Keogh had started 12 of Wycombe’s matches in the third tier this term and had played the full 90 minutes in nine of their previous 18 – while he was also named as captain against Oxford and Cambridge United.
Despite his continued presence under manager Matt Bloomfield, Wycombe confirmed today that the 37-year-old had left the club by mutual consent to allow him to ‘pursue new opportunies elsewhere’.
Bloomfield said: “I think a great deal of him – he’s a fantastic guy and he’s been a really good influence around the place and on the training pitch. We had an honest conversation and his playing time was going to be reduced in the second half of the season so we’ve come to an amicable parting of ways, but he leaves with nothing but good wishes and I look forward to keeping in touch with him.”

It’s unclear what Richard Keogh’s plans are next, but he was certainly a very solid defender at League One level.
Fans on social media were left unsure about his shock exit, while Keogh addressed supporters and said: “A big thank you to all the players, staff and fans who have all been absolutely amazing during my time here. It’s time for a new chapter. Grateful for the memories.”
