Derby County’s summer transfer target Matty Godden is set to sign a new deal with Coventry City, putting an end to rumours circulating around his future.

According to Alan Nixon, the forward is set to commit to new terms at Coventry despite attracting interest from the Rams and Oxford United as the lure of Championship football was too much to turn down for the 32-year-old.

Godden is ready to sign a two-year extension with the Sky Blues, including the option of a further year.

Now that the striker is off the cards for the Rams, they can firmly turn their attention to other targets.

Derby confirmed the signing of Martyn Waghorn yesterday, he now joins James Collins and Conor Washington in the forward department at the club. Paul Warne will still be keen to add another striker to his ranks, however, with a trio of possible signings all linked to his side in the past week.

If not Godden, then who?

Jordan Rhodes had been touted with a move to Pride Park, but that has gone quiet in recent weeks. One reason being the lucrative contract he currently possesses at Huddersfield Town.

Another striker said to have held talks with the Rams is ex-Sheffield United man Billy Sharp. The free agent is also of interest to Coventry and Rotherham United, but the Sky Blues may now be out of the race due to Godden extending his stay.

Finally, Sheffield Wednesday’s Michael Smith was the subject of a loan bid from Derby. The approach was knocked back by the Owls, though Warne’s side could potentially still return with an improved offer.

If the Rams do land a new addition up top, then it could spell the end for Collins who has his admirers at former club Shrewsbury Town. The only way he would be allowed to exit Pride Park would be if a replacement was brought in.

Time is beginning to run out with the transfer window now not too far from closing, so movement is expected in plentiful during the coming weeks.

Derby fans will be hoping to see their depth strengthened as soon as possible.
