In unforeseen circumstances, Andre Wisdom proved the unlikely match winner on Tuesday evening as Derby County prevailed 2-1 over Wycombe Wanderers.

The defender, who has been a mainstay in the squad since Wayne Rooney took charge, saw his effort hit the back of the net less than a minute before referee Kevin Friend blew his whistle for full-time.

Wisdom was the standout player by far for The Rams, recording several pretty impressive stats to accompany his late strike.

An Uche Ikpeazu own goal saw Derby take the lead in the first half. The 25-year-old target man then redeemed himself, equalising from the penalty spot, sending David Marshall the wrong way in the 48th minute.

It looked set to end all square as top scorer Colin Kazim-Richards squandered a golden opportunity late on, however, Wisdom had other ideas.

Into the final minute of an additional four, Martyn Waghorn’s free kick smacked off the post and into the path of ‘Wiz’, who scored only his second goal in The Rams’ colours, firing the ball through a sea of bodies and over the line to ensure all three points were heading back to the East Midlands.

Supporters took to Twitter to have their say on Wisdom’s splendid display.

So where does that result leave Derby?

Rooney’s men now sit 16th, ahead of fierce rivals Nottingham Forest and six points away from the bottom three, partly thanks to Stoke City beating Sheffield Wednesday 1-0.

The Rams host Watford on Friday evening in what promises to be a tough affair, although, we have seen the boys raise their game multiple times this season when facing higher ranked opposition.

Results could certainly go either way against The Hornets, but let’s hope Derby can continue their impressive form, grab their sixth win in seven, and pull further away from that dreaded relegation zone.
