EFL pundit makes bold Derby County prediction ahead of 2024/25 Championship season

Derby County are back in the Championship after a two-season absence.

Paul Warne‘s side sealed automatic promotion on the final day after defeating Carlisle United 2-0 at Pride Park.

The Rams conceded the fewest goals in League One, shipping just 37 across the gruelling 46-game campaign.

Warne’s style has come under criticism at points this term, but there’s little doubting his defensive know-how.

They’ll be a tough side to beat in the Championship but how does Ryan Dilks, host of the Second Tier podcast, think they’ll fare?

It’s been a joyous few days in the East Midlands, as Derby supporters continue their jubilant celebrations having bounced back to the second tier.

It’s been a tough season but they got over the line in second place, amassing 92 points, five more than third-placed Bolton Wanderers.

Dilks turned his attention towards next term and made a pretty bold prediction about Warne’s future at Pride Park.

“I’m not sure we’ve had many clubs get promoted in recent years where a fan base has been as unconvinced by the manager as Derby fans have been in Paul Warne,” the podcaster said.

“He was nearly sacked around Autumn time and his football is by no means pleasing on the eye.

“I’m not sure his rating amongst Derby fans is going to improve next season when you remember that the long and short of it is his Championship record is absolutely appalling.

“Three seasons in the second tier and three relegations.

“I’ll be surprised if he lasts the whole season, if I’m honest.”

Derby County need several signings

Derby have a whopping 15 players out of contract in the summer, including Joe Wildsmith, who was crowned League One’s Golden Glove winner.

Top scorer James Collins is also set to become a free agent after netting 14 goals across all competitions, as is Conor Hourihane, the second top assister.

The Rams need several signings to compete in the second tier, especially up front, where they certainly didn’t excel in League One.

The four sides that finished below them all scored more goals, so it’s evidently an area that needs improvement and quality additions.
