One former Derby County manager is set to take up an exciting new role this season.

The Rams are currently flying high in the Championship under the guidance of Paul Warne.

Warne was appointed Derby County manager in September 2022 and secured them a return to the second tier of English football in the 2023/24 season.

The Derbyshire outfit have won two and lost two of their opening Championship fixtures, leaving them 10th in the league table prior to the September international break.

It has been an impressive start but fans of the club are no doubt hoping Warne can return them to their former glory years, which included them pushing for a play-off place most seasons.

Derby’s highest finish in the last decade came in the 2015/16 campaign when they managed to secure fifth place in the Championship.

The man in charge for most of that season was Paul Clement.

Former Derby County boss Paul Clement set for new role

Clement was appointed manager of Derby on June 1st, 2015, after the Rams parted ways with ex-Middlesbrough and England coach, Steve McClaren.

The 52-year-old lost just one game in 19 fixtures between September and December but the second half of the season did not go as planned.

Clement was sacked on February 8th, 2016 after securing just one win in seven outings. He has since taken up various other coaching roles with the likes of Bayern Munich, Swansea City and most recently, Everton.

Now, as per Nizaar Kinsella, Clement will join Chelsea legend Claude Makelele as his assistant at Greek outfit, Asteras Tripolis.

How Derby County fared after Paul Clement exit

Darren Wassall took temporary charge of the Rams after Clement was sacked, leading them to a play-off spot.

However, Derby failed to win the play-offs that season, and Nigel Pearson was then appointed on a permanent basis in May 2016.

Pearson and Chris Powell had very brief stints at Pride Park before McClaren returned for a second spell until March 2017 when he once again left.

Gary Rowett, Frank Lampard, Phillip Cocu, Wayne Rooney and Liam Rosenior have all since tried and failed to turn the club’s fortunes around.

But things are finally starting to look up under Warne and with some smart summer business concluded and an excellent home record to start the campaign, Derby should fancy their chances of staying in the Championship this season.
