Derby County signed 12 players in the summer transfer window as Paul Warne looked to improve on a seventh-place finish in League One last season.
Warne also had a big task on his hands when it came to replacing some of the outgoing players, like defender Curtis Davies, midfielder Jason Knight and striker David McGoldrick.
They managed to bring players like Curtis Nelson, Tyrese Fornah and Conor Washington to replace them, who have all had mixed spells with the Rams so far.
Here we take a look at three players that Derby County missed out on signing in the summer, and how they are getting on so far this season for their respective clubs.
Who did Derby miss out on?
Billy Sharp
Billy Sharp is a player whom Derby fans have not liked for a number of years.
But surprisingly the former Sheffield United striker was linked with a move to Pride Park in the summer window, with his contract having expired at the Blades at the end of last season, following their promotion to the Premier League.
Instead of Derby or even anywhere in England, he would go on to join LA Galaxy in the MLS, where he would play alongside the likes of former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez and former Juventus winger Douglas Costa.
After scoring six goals in 12 games in the MLS, Sharp is set to be a free agent in January. Could Warne go back in for him in January?
Sam Cosgrove
Sam Cosgrove is another striker who was linked with a move to Derby.
Currently contracted to Birmingham City in the Championship, Cosgrove impressed last season whilst on loan at League One champions Plymouth Argyle, scoring eight goals.
He instead chose to join fellow League One side Barnsley on loan but has been considered a flop so far, failing to score so far this season.
Michael Smith
Michael Smith is currently a striker for Sheffield Wednesday and was linked with a move to Derby to link up with former boss Warne, as they worked together previously at Rotherham United.
However, he stayed put at Wednesday in the Championship, following their promotion from League One last season.
He has scored three goals in 12 games for the Owls so far, but they have struggled, currently sitting bottom of the second tier.
