Derby County duo Korey Smith and Max Bird could be in the squad to face Port Vale despite coming off with injuries against Bristol Rovers.

The Rams claimed a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon, with an own goal from Jack Hunt giving Derby the lead midway through the second half.

Former Derby striker Chris Martin then levelled for the away side in the 87th minute, who looked to have stolen a point for the Gas in the dying minutes.

But in-form winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing stepped up to score just two minutes later to give the Rams all three points, with the result pushing them into the play-off places.

Speaking to the Derby Telegraph following the win over Rovers, Derby manager Paul Warne said the duo could be in line for a quick return to the squad.

“Korey felt his knee and was one of those where your leg goes one way and the ankle goes the other. It was a no-brainer to put Tyrese on and that was always going to happen.

“The physio said he was okay but not right. But by the time he had walked around to the dugout he said he was okay. But it isn’t a game that I needed to carry anyone because I have a good set of players behind me.

“Birdy felt a little bit squiffy. He didn’t feel 100 per cent so I took him off and pushed Louie Sibley in and put Ryan Nyambe the other side. I don’t think either will be missing on Tuesday but I don’t honestly know.”

Bird & Smith return big boost for Warne

It will be a boost for Warne knowing he will hopefully not have two of Derby’s key midfielders out on the sidelines.

Bird has been one of Derby’s best players since his return from an ankle injury last month.

Warne confirmed last week that the club will be offering him a new contract ahead of the January transfer window, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

They will want to get a deal done quickly, with Hull City reportedly preparing to come back in for Bird in January after failing to sign him in the summer.
