Reported Derby County transfer target Joe Pigott has taken his season tally to eleven goals after again finding the net – more than the entire Rams squad combined.

AFC Wimbledon were on the wrong end of a 5-2 hammering at Charlton Athletic.

But that didn’t stop Pigott from demonstrating his quality as he netted for the fifth game in succession to take his League One tally to nine goals in 16 starts.

According to TEAMtalk, Pigott’s form is attracting Championship interest.

Derby County and Huddersfield Town are listed as suitors, while Bristol City and Birmingham City are also monitoring his progress ahead of the January transfer window.

Pigott’s contract at AFC Wimbledon expires in the summer of 2021.

The League One club face a potential dilemma. Should they cash in on him in January or retain him until the summer as they hope to bid for an unlikely promotion?

Wales Online claimed Swansea City and Reading were keen during the summer, adding AFC Wimbledon would seek around £200,000 due to his contract situation.

While his value may well now have doubled, he still represents a bargain.

Aside from his nine league goals, Pigott also has notched four assists.

Standing at 6ft 2inch, the 27-year-old enjoys the physical battle. He is excellent in the air, good at holding the ball up and bringing others into play in the final third.

Derby are crying out for a striker in this mould following Chris Martin’s departure.

The Rams are currently on a five-game unbeaten run. Colin Kazim-Richards is leading the line, and the 34-year-old has surpassed most supporters’ expectations thus far.

Goals, however, remain a problem. Derby have found the net just eight times all season.

Despite the improvement under interim manager Wayne Rooney, the Rams still struggle to create and score goals – netting three times in seven games since Phillip Cocu’s exit.

Pigott could be a solution to their problems in January at a bargain price.
