Martyn Waghorn, Duane Holmes and Tom Lawrence grabbed the goals for Derby.

And commenting on Twitter after the game, Shane Nicholson singled out Lawrence for praise and believes the attacker is in the best form of his career.

Lawrence joined Derby for around £5 million in the summer of 2017.

The former Leicester City man was immediately compared to Tom Ince after the current Stoke City winger left Derby to join Huddersfield Town in the Premier League.

It was an unfair comparison. And Lawrence has struggled for consistency.

The 26-year-old’s popularity at Derby took a dive following his involvement in the drink-driving incident. Club captain Richard Keogh was subsequently sacked.

On the field, however, Lawrence is starting to make amends. He has already matched last season’s tally, posting six goals and two assists in 27 starts this term.

In his last five Championship starts, Lawrence has one goal and two assists. Off the ball, he is working harder, positioning himself better and providing better defensive cover.

Manager Phillip Cocu has been patient with Lawrence. It feels the Wales international is starting to repay that faith, and now he must look to push on.
