Derby County secured a comfortable 2-0 win over Exeter City on Tuesday night, with Nathaniel Mendez-Laing starring.
The Guatemalan came in for his first start since before the international break, after returning from international duty late last week.
Mendez-Laing got on the scoresheet first, scoring on the half hour mark, before Conor Washington struck in the 79th minute to secure all three points at Pride Park.
Mendez-Laing stats back his performance up
The 31-year-old played at left wing, coming in for Tom Barkhuizen who was dropped to the bench after starting in the 1-0 defeat away at Shrewsbury Town on Saturday afternoon.
He usually plays on the right wing, but on Tuesday night’s viewing you would not have noticed a difference, which just showed his quality.
The stats back up his performance, too. He made the most successful dribbles with seven, more than any other player on the pitch.
He was also second in the match for most key passes, with four. He was also third for the amount of touches, with 70.
Journalist for the Derby Telegraph Leigh Curtis was also raving about Mendez-Laing’s performance, saying it was his ‘best performance of the season’.
Rams need to be careful with contract situation
Mendez-Laing has always been a threat at manager Paul Warne’s disposal, with his raw pace and power causing a lot of problems for League One full backs.
That’s even without including his brilliant dribbling ability, which shows League One level may be a little low for him.
The Rams will have to be careful if they are to want him to stick around past this season, with his contract expiring in the summer.
