Paul Warne must be ruthless with deadwood Derby County duo after recent transfer rumour

Derby County may have to cut back on the deadwood in the squad after recent transfer links.

Derby County’s stand-off with Blackburn Rovers in the opening Championship game of the 2024/25 season ended in poor fashion for the Rams, particularly in the second half where John Eustace’s side took control.

There were glaring errors dotted across the pitch, in particular from defender Eiran Cashin, who surprisingly dropped an unsatisfactory performance in the club’s return to the Championship.

Kayden Jackson led the line for Paul Warne’s side, however was unable to convert on his Derby County competitive debut, opening up the question as to whether the Rams may have to further bolster their front line.

Jerry Yates has been brought in this summer, however Warne is looking to bring yet another Championship striker through the door, with Luton Town striker Cauley Woodrow linked with a move to Pride Park.

If Derby County manage to get a deal for Woodrow over the line, Warne will have to take a ruthless approach with one Rams pair who could be shown the exit door.

Derby County duo James Collins and Conor Washington must be moved on

There still remains the issue of Luton Town bringing in extra attacking recruitments if they are to sanction a move for Woodrow, however if he does then Warne will have to move on players in order for his squad to not be too overpopulated.

The number of strikers in the squad, if Woodrow signed, would be up to a total of five, and if Warne was to look at making cuts, he would have to consider the futures of both James Collins and Conor Washington.

The pair will unlikely get minutes in Warne’s one-striker formation, particularly Washington who wasn’t even in the squad that travelled to Ewood Park.

Ruthless edge will be needed for Derby County to make the step up to the Championship

Derby County’s opening day defeat was almost a wake up call for Warne’s side, who were simply outclassed by their opponents in Lancashire.

Warne has a race against the clock to identify all the players in the squad that won’t be able to cut it at Championship level, and make the necessary changes needed.

The current depth in attack gives the former Rotherham United boss the opportunity to move both Collins and Washington on this summer, and he must take this approach with many players dotted around the squad if more players are brought in throughout August.

Not only will that rough edge shown by Warne help get rid of those not of a high enough quality, but it will push the current ranks to their limit as they look to show that they are good enough for the level.
