According to a report in the Daily Mail, Derby County are interested in signing Kieran Dowell on loan.

The report claims Derby are looking to hijack Huddersfield Town’s bid for the player.

New Rams boss Phillip Cocu worked with Everton’s director of football Marcel Brands at PSV Eindhoven. The connection makes sense, and Derby could benefit by having the pick of Everton’s top talent.

Dowell is a highly-rated attacking midfielder. He enjoyed previous spells at Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United, helping the latter win promotion to the Premier League.

Everton fans have taken to Twitter to comment on the speculation, and many feel he would be a top addition for the Rams.

What can Kieran Dowell bring to Derby County?

Derby must strengthen their squad this summer. Mason Mount and Harry Wilson’s departures this summer back to parent clubs Chelsea and Liverpool respectively removes a lot of talent from the side.

Mount and Wilson scored a combined 27 goals last season on loan at Derby. Meanwhile, fellow midfielders and popular figures Craig Bryson and Bradley Johnson have also departed Pride Park.

Derby’s current squad doesn’t have the necessary quality to mount a promotion challenge. Cocu needs at least six new signings, with one or two of those likely to be top youngsters on loan.

Dowell can help fill the void left by Mount. The 21-year-old playmaker scored nine goals and grabbed four assists in 31 Championship starts for Nottingham Forest during a loan spell in 2017/18.

Everton can be confident he will get minutes at Derby, and Brands will know Cocu can help develop his game.
