New Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack told the Scotsman he won’t sell his side’s top players for cheap amid reports Derby County and Stoke City want Sam Cosgrove.

According to The Sun on Sunday (December 1; page 62), Aberdeen have slapped a £4 million price-tag on Cosgrove as Derby and Stoke consider moving for him in January.

Cosgrove has been in excellent form for the Dons. His latest strike in the 1-0 win over Hamilton was his 19th of the season already. He is on course to break a club record.

Speaking to reporters, Cormack acknowledges the interest in his main striker, but he warns suitors the Scottish Premiership side will only sell on their terms.

We are under no pressure to sell anyone and we’ll only do that on our terms. It doesn’t matter what player it is, we don’t need to sell. Obviously, if there is a substantial return on a player and it makes sense for us then obviously we would consider it but we would only do that after speaking to Derek [McInnes] and it makes sense for him, with his ins and outs for the window.

Cormack went on to say that Aberdeen haven’t received an approach for Cosgrove yet.

Derby are in need of an injection of quality after difficult start.

Despite having the likes of Chris Martin, Jack Marriott and Martyn Waghorn as striker options, the Rams have only netted 21 goals in 22 Championship games this term.

Cosgrove could give them a different threat. Standing at 6ft 2inch, he is excellent in the air and he enjoys the physical battles with the opposition defenders.

Derby manager Phillip Cocu enjoyed plenty of success with PSV Eindhoven with Luuk de Jong acting as a pivot upfront. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him repeat that method.

Cosgrove, 22, was released by Everton as a youngster. He has his best years ahead of him, and Aberdeen signed him for a bargain £25,000 fee back in 2018.
