According to the Coventry Telegraph, Derby County are among several clubs tracking Coventry City’s Jordan Willis.

The 24-year-old central defender came through the Coventry academy and is a popular figure at the club. However, with his contract set to expire in the summer, it seems Willis will walk away on a free.

The report names Derby County, Bristol City, Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday as keen admirers of Willis. Luton Town, though, have been installed as the favourites following their promotion to the Championship.

Willis has been a key figure for Coventry over the past few seasons. He has played in over 200 games for the Sky Blues, illustrating his ability to play at a higher level.

Why Jordan Willis is a viable option for Derby County:

Derby are short on centre-back options. Alex Pearce, currently on loan at Millwall, is out of contract this summer while Fikayo Tomori’s loan spell ends after the playoffs. Efe Ambrose’s deal also expires this summer.

Manager Frank Lampard will have to sign at least one centre-back this summer to partner Richard Keogh, while ideally the Rams should be looking at a younger option to also provide squad depth.

Defence isn’t the only area the Rams will need to focus on this summer. Midfielders Bradley Johnson, Craig Bryson and Jacob Butterfield are all out of contract, leaving a void to fill.

Derby have already added Graeme Shinnie to their ranks, but as for future signings it may depend on which league the Rams are featuring in next season as promotion to the Premier League is still a possibility.

Frank Lampard’s side secured sixth spot with victory over West Bromwich Albion last weekend. They now face Leeds United over two legs, with West Brom and Aston Villa contesting the other semi-final.
