According to a report in TEAMtalk, Derby County are among several Championship clubs looking to sign Sheffield Wednesday’s Morgan Fox in January.

Fox’s contract at Wednesday expires in the summer of 2020.

The 26-year-old left-back has been in excellent form this season. And the Owls could be tempted to let him go on the cheap now rather than lose him for free next summer.

TEAMtalk claim West Bromwich Albion, Nottingham Forest, Blackburn Rovers, Huddersfield Town and Derby are all keen on him, with the latter reportedly renewing their interest.

Sheffield Wednesday signed Fox from Charlton Athletic in January 2017. The Yorkshire Post claim they beat Championship rivals Derby to his signature at the time.

Why Derby County’s links to Morgan Fox seem strange:

It seems strange Derby were keen at the time. Afterall, Steve McClaren was manager then and he had Craig Forsyth, Marcus Olsson and Max Lowe for left-back options.

The Rams still have Max Lowe on their books, while Scott Malone and youngster Lee Buchanan also provide left-back options again making the links somewhat bizarre.

Fox has started 14 Championship games this season. He averages 2.1 tackles and 2.6 effective clearances per league encounter for Garry Monk’s playoff contenders.

Derby must strengthen in January following their recent struggles. Manager Phillip Cocu needs the opportunity to shape the squad in his own style.

That said, there are more pressing areas of the side to look at ahead of the fullback positions. A central defender and a new winger are surely priorities in January.
