Derby County set to miss out on goalkeeper transfer to European giants, his medical is already booked

Derby County are gearing up for a busy summer transfer window as Paul Warne prepares for life back in the Championship.

The Rams earned a huge promotion from League One last season, but know that work is required if they want to keep their second-tier status.

A large overhaul of the squad is already underway as plenty of contract exits have made way for some transfer incomings.

Ben Osborn, Kayden Jackson, Jerry Yates and Kenzo Goudmijn have all made their way to Pride Park for the season ahead.

While the quartet will no doubt bolster the options available to Warne, the Derby boss is far from finished with his business this summer.

There are plenty of positions that need additions, not least in the goalkeeper ranks where both Joe Wildsmith and Scott Loach left at the end of their contracts.

That leaves just Josh Vickers as the only recognised first-team shot-stopper, leading to some big links for a new glovesman.

Mathew Ryan set to snub Derby County transfer

One goalkeeper who has been linked with a move to Moor Farm this summer is AZ Alkmaar’s Mathew Ryan.

The Australian international has a wealth of experience, having played in the Premier League for Brighton and Arsenal.

While it appeared an ambitious move for the Rams, it appears as though Ryan will snub the side in favour of a European giant.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the 32-year-old is readying a move to AS Roma, with a one-year contract on the table with an extra year option inserted into the deal.

Ryan is now set for a medical at Roma, which should end any interest from Derby barring a late change of heart.

Derby goalkeeping options

For the time being, it appears as though Derby will have to move on to new targets in the goalkeeping department.

Free agent Marek Rodak is one name touted with a switch after his release from Fulham, while Leicester City’s Daniel Iversen is another linked.

Beyond them, the Rams may have to get creative and look elsewhere if they can’t land the players they want.

There’s still plenty of time left in the window though, with a goalkeeper becoming the clear priority for the next few weeks.

Vickers is capable of playing as a number one, while academy goalkeeper Jack Thompson could well become the third-choice option in replacing Loach.
