Derby County still interested in ‘brilliant’ goalkeeper despite Jacob Widell Zetterstrom bid agreed

Derby County have seen a bid for Jacob Widell Zetterstrom accepted but he isn’t the only goalkeeper on their radar.

Paul Warne is currently fleshing out his Derby squad ahead of their Championship campaign, starting with a trip to Blackburn Rovers on August 9th.

The Rams have been extremely busy in recent weeks, announcing five new arrivals to Pride Park – including the return of Ebou Adams – who could be shortly joined by Crystal Palace midfielder David Ozoh.

Warne has also been desperate to sign a new goalkeeper this summer following the departures of Joe Wildsmith and Scott Loach.

On Tuesday, it was reported that Derby had agreed to a £1.4 million transfer for Jacob Widell Zetterstrom from Swedish club Djurgardens, although they may have to wait for him to complete his move as he’s set to play in the Europa Conference League qualifiers.

Zetterstrom isn’t the only goalkeeper the Rams are looking to sign, as interest continues in a Premier League shot-stopper.

Derby County still want Leicester City’s Daniel Iversen, but there is one problem

Last month, it was reported that Derby wanted to sign Daniel Iversen on loan from Premier League side Leicester City.

The 26-year-old spent last season on loan at Stoke City in the Championship, where he kept seven clean sheets in 18 appearances however, with one year left on his deal, the Foxes are looking to shift him on.

Whilst Carlton Palmer urged David Clowes to ‘stick his hands in his pockets’ to sign the ‘brilliant’ goalkeeper despite his £20,000-per-week wages, a fresh update has since emerged on their pursuit.

According to talkSPORT broadcaster Geoff Peters, the Rams ‘remain keen’ on signing the towering Dane but the two clubs are way apart in their valuation, as Leicester reportedly want £1.5 million, while Derby are only prepared to offer much less.

Derby should end their pursuit of Daniel Iversen

Providing Derby are successful in their pursuit of the highly-rated Zetterstrom, it makes zero sense for them to pursue Leicester’s Iversen.

Although he’s undoubtedly a talented goalkeeper, who was labelled ‘brilliant’ by Steven Schumacher for his performances at Stoke, it isn’t worth paying £1.5 million for a keeper who is out of contract in 2025.

The Rams could wait until next summer and get him on a free transfer instead, while his current reported wage of £20,000 should be enough to put them off.

There’s no question that Derby need another goalkeeper on top of Zetterstrom but not someone who will necessarily challenge for the number one spot, perhaps a veteran who is happy to play his role as a second or third choice.

It’s unlikely Warne would shell out seven figures for a keeper, only for him to sit on the bench, so a cheaper alternative to Iversen must be looked at.
