Scunthorpe United’s official website has confirmed reported Derby County target Joey Dawson has signed a three-year deal with Celtic.

Dawson, 18, created history at League Two side Scunthorpe United.

The talented striker became the club’s youngest ever debutant at 16 years and 75 days as he appeared in a Carabao Cup encounter against Derby in August 2019.

Dawson’s promise attracted strong interest from higher up the leagues.

According to Iron Bru in April, Scunthorpe offered him a new professional deal as Derby were monitoring his progress while Celtic were also keen to prize him away.

Dawson ultimately rejected Scunthorpe’s offer. Now, the club’s official website has confirmed the attacker has joined the Hoops with The Iron due a compensation fee.

Celtic’s success with pre-contract signings from England:

It’s not the first time Celtic have signed a top young talent from south of the border at the end of his contract, with Moussa Dembele’s arrival in 2016 a monumental success.

Dembele won every domestic trophy during his time at Celtic. The 24-year-old later joined Lyon for around £20 million which saw Celtic net a huge profit on the Frenchman.

The Glasgow side will be hoping Dawson can become another inspired addition.

The youngster has shown great promise at Scunthorpe, scoring 16 goals in their youth team last season. He is also the nephew of Nottingham Forest hero Michael Dawson.

Derby, meanwhile, will have to look elsewhere after missing out on Dawson.

The Rams are short on numbers heading into their pre-season campaign. A new striker or two is a top priority with Martyn Waghorn out of contract this summer.
