Elliot Embleton will join Derby County on loan.

That’s according to Alan Nixon, who has reported that the League One club have agreed a loan deal for the midfielder.

Embleton has picked up plenty of experience in winning promotion from the third tier since making his senior debut for Sunderland in 2017.

After initially struggling to force his way into the Black Cats’ first team, Embleton was sent to Blackpool on loan halfway through the 2020-21 season.

The England youth international shone for the Seasiders, scoring twice and providing four assists as he helped them win the League One play-offs.

He swiftly returned to Wearside the following summer and bagged eight goals and six assists as he won the play-offs for a second year running, while he also scored the first of Sunderland’s goals in their 2-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers in the final and was also named as their Young Player of the Year.

Embleton was unable to build on a successful campaign with his boyhood club after suffering a broken ankle and ligament damage in December, keeping him sidelined for the past nine months.

With the 24-year-old now unlikely to claw his way back into Tony Mowbray’s plans, he will now return to the third tier for a third time to join the Rams.

Elliot Embleton could be ready to play for Derby County

The Sunderland boss confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Embleton would be fit to face Southampton tomorrow, meaning Derby shouldn’t have to wait for him to return to full fitness upon his arrival.

However, he unfortunately won’t have signed for the club in time to be able to feature in their visit to Bolton Wanderers tomorrow afternoon.

The former Grimsby Town loanee will become Derby’s eleventh signing of the summer, joining a host of players arriving from the Championship such as Callum Elder, Martyn Waghorn and Kane Wilson.
