Derby County boss Paul Warne says loan deals are more likely than permanent ones in January.
The January transfer window is fast approaching, with little over a month until the window opens.
As ever, clubs in the Football League will be eagerly awaiting the opening of the transfer window and Derby County will be no different.
The Rams have struggled for consistency in League One this season. But three-straight wins, with the last being a 2-1 win at home to Bristol Rovers, sees Warne’s side currently sitting in 6th.
And speaking to Derbyshire Live ahead of a trip to Port Vale tonight, Warne has given an insight into Derby County’s January transfer window and what it might entail.
He said:
“It’s just about getting players in to come and help this team. It doesn’t bother me if they are loans or permanents. I would prefer permanents because they are here for the long term. However there is a benefit to loans.
“Sometimes, because January is a difficult month to do deals whereas the summer they are all free transfers. In fairness, it’s more likely that loans will happen than permanent signings. We have to try to keep pushing the club forward and improve. It would be amiss of me to rule either out.”
Where do Derby County need to strengthen?
Derby have both a good defensive record and a fairly good attacking record so far this season, having scored 30 and conceded 16 in 17 League One outings so far.
But consistency has been the miss for the Rams and so Warne may be keen on adding some experience to his ranks.
He could do with a few players who’ve been in this position before and who know what it takes to get out of the division.
More specifically, the Rams could do with another striker to take some weight off James Collins’ shoulders, a winger on either side to add some depth, and potentially a central midfielder should Max Bird be sold in January.
Where will the Rams look?
With loan signings looking like the likelihood, expect Derby County to scour the Premier League for some up and coming youngsters who they could bring in for the second half of the season.
The Rams have had success doing this in the past, and they could also look towards the Championship; here they might find those more experienced players who are perhaps out of favour this season and available for a temporary move away.
It’s a very difficult transfer window for clubs in the Football League and Derby have the added pressure of names like Bird and Eiran Cashin having potential suitors as they approach the ends of their current deals.
But if Derby can keep hold of both of them and add some quality to their ranks, then promotion could be very much on the cards for Warne and his side.
