According to the Manchester Evening News, Derby County could miss out on the loan signing of Teden Mengi as Manchester United contemplate their next move this summer.
Mengi joined Derby on loan in the January transfer window.
The United youngster predominantly featured for the Red Devils U23 side, and he looked shaky on his Derby debut in the 2-1 win at Wycombe Wanderers in February.
But Mengi soon became an established figure in Derby’s defence. He could play either on the right side of a central back three, or as a central defender in a two.
The 19-year-old started seven Championship games for the Rams, before injury following the 1-0 defeat at home to league title winners Norwich City ended his season early.

Manager Wayne Rooney was full or praise for the defender, and the Derby boss strongly suggested to reporters how the club have an agreement to sign him again for next season.
The latest reports from the MEN, however, suggests that is no longer the case.
The Manchester publication claims United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is considering bringing Mengi into his first team squad next season, while there is also the possibility of sending him out on loan to another Premier League club as to aid his development.
It is claimed as things stand, Mengi will re-join United’s senior pre-season squad.
Derby have a major rebuilding job on their hands with the defence this summer.
Aside from Mengi, fellow central defenders Matt Clarke and George Edmunson have also returned Brighton and Rangers respectively following loan spells at Pride Park.
Curtis Davies and Andre Wisdom, meanwhile, are out of contract next month. Come July 1, Derby could realistically have no senior central defenders on their books.
