According to Lancashire Live, Derby County U23 coach Gary Bowyer is the primary candidate to take over the vacant managerial position at League Two side Salford City.

Bowyer joined Derby in September last year.

The former Blackburn Rovers manager became the head coach of Derby’s U23 squad, with Darren Wassall taking on a new role of overseeing the entire academy.

Bowyer has plenty of experience, managing over 100 Championship games while in charge of Blackburn before spells at Blackpool and Bradford City.

Salford are on the lookout for a new manager after Richie Wellens’ exit.

Wellens guided Salford to the Papa John’s Trophy last week but stumbled form in their bid for promotion sees the 40-year-old and the Manchester-based club depart ways.

Salford have risen through the leagues in recent years under the ownership of project 92 Limited consisting of the Neville brothers, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

The 49-year-old former fullback has impressed during his role at Derby U23s, with the club third in the Premier League 2 table despite several players joining the senior squad.
