Some Derby County supporters have taken to Twitter to share their relief at the club reportedly opting against signing Charlton Athletic’s Jonathan Williams in the summer.

According to Wales Online, the Wales international was offered to both Derby County and West Bromwich Albion but a deal with either failed to materialise.

Williams signed a short-term deal with Charlton following a loan spell with the Addicks last term. And some Derby fans are happy the Rams missed out on his signature.

Jonathan Williams becomes a regular for Charlton:

Williams was instrumental for Charlton in the second half of last season. He helped the Addicks earn promotion to the Championship via the League One playoffs.

Lee Bowyer’s side have since made a decent start to life back in the second tier, winning five of 11 games. Williams, meanwhile, has four assists in eight league starts.

The 26-year-old ironically started both of Wales’ recent Euro2020 qualifiers ahead of Derby attacker Tom Lawrence and last season’s top scorer Harry Wilson.

Williams plays as an attack-minded midfielder. Derby have lacked creativity this season, and the former Palace player perhaps could have been a handy alternative to Duane Holmes.

He has also averaged 1.5 successful take-ons and 1-1 key passes per game.

The Rams, however, thought differently. Holmes’ recovery from injury and Jamie Paterson’s form has helped as Derby face Charlton having scored seven goals in their last three games.
