According to The Sun on Sunday (23/05/2021, page 59), Rotherham United have joined Derby County and Cardiff City in the chase to sign Accrington Stanley’s Dion Charles.

The 25-year-old striker has been on fire this season, netting 19 league goals.

Charles’ form in League One has attracted interest from the Championship, with The Sun claiming in March how Derby and Cardiff are keen on his services.

Charles later won his first cap with Northern Ireland as he featured against the USA.

It has been an excellent campaign for the striker, and the latest reports from The Sun claim Rotherham have also joined the list of clubs vying for his signature this summer.

The Millers suffered relegation on the final day of the season with a draw at Cardiff. However, Paul Warne’s side will be favourites to make an immediate return to the second tier.

Derby, meanwhile, survived on the final day after a 3-3 draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

The Rams head into the summer with uncertainty following Erik Alonso’s failed takeover bid, while the EFL recently won their appeal of charges against the east Midlands club.

On the field, Derby are in desperate need of a shake-up and a new striker must be a top priority after they finished the season as the Championship’s lowest scorers.

Colin Kazim-Richards turns 35 in August, while Lee Gregory has returned to parent club Stoke City after his loan spell and Martyn Waghorn’s contract expires next month.

Charles could be an exciting option for Wayne Rooney’s side. However, with limited finances, Derby may struggle to compete with Accrington rating him at £1.5 million.
