According to Sky Sports transfer centre (31/01, 20:36), Derby County will sign Rangers defender George Edmundson on loan subject to his medical on Monday morning.
The Gers central defender moved to Ibrox from Oldham Athletic.
Edmundson has an abundance of potential, however he has been restricted for game time at Rangers with Connor Goldson, Filip Helander and Leon Balogun for competition.
The 23-year-old has made just one substitute appearance in the Scottish Premiership this term, but Rangers manager Steven Gerrard still believes he has a big future ahead.
The former Liverpool captain told the Daily Record six months ago:
“George looks like he’s kicking on. He still has little bits of his game that are raw. But we have to remember that he was playing in League One just 20 games ago. He is now playing for Rangers against Lyon and Nice alongside Connor. It has been a big year for George. He has certainly got the potential, the attitude and mentality to keep improving and getting better. The future for George is whatever he wants it to be if he keeps learning, growing and stays professional. I think he can become a top centre-back. We love him.”
Derby manager Wayne Rooney has seemingly been given the green light by owner Mel Morris to bring in players ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.
The Rams are short on senior players with Duane Holmes and Mike te Wierik having already left, while Morgan Whittaker, George Evans and Kaide Gordon are set for deadline day moves.
Curtis Davies is already out for the season with injury, and Krystian Bielik could follow after his knee injury on Saturday leaving Derby extremely short on defensive options.
Edmundson will provide cover for Andre Wisdom and Matt Clarke, while also giving Derby the option to start him should Rooney switch to a back three which he has done before.
Kenny Dalglish wrote in The Sunday Post in March 2020 that the young defender “has a bright future and could go on to become a big, big player for Rangers”.
Edmundson, ultimately, needs playing time, and Rangers may feel he’ll get more chances at Derby over the next six months.
