£5k-a-week Derby County star now loving new role under Paul Warne this season

Derby County star Kane Wilson has made an interesting claim following their convincing 3-0 victory over Leyton Orient on Saturday.

Derby were dominant in that fixture and stamped their authority onto proceedings from the get-go with a stunning strike from Louie Sibley.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing then curled an effort into the far corner before forward Tom Barkhuizen came off the bench to add the icing to the top of the cake.

Paul Warne’s side have made it five successive victories in League One and following Bolton Wanderers defeat against Portsmouth last night, are now three points behind the automatic promotion places.

Derby are loving life under Warne, whose style is reaping the rewards, and that is a sentiment echoed by Kane Wilson.

Since his summer arrival from Bristol City, the versatile player has been played in numerous positions but has recently been deployed further up the field and it’s a role he feels he’s thriving in.

What did Kane Wilson say about his new role?

Warne’s options down the right flank are currently limited.

On Saturday, the only attacking players on the bench were Tyreece John-Jules and Barkhuizen, which meant Wilson was given a full ninety minutes to flourish down the right flank and show what he’s capable of.

Speaking to RamsTV after the game, he said: “When you start to get a little run in the team, you relax a bit and can start putting your best performances in, hopefully.

“It’s a new role for me in terms of being a bit further forward but I’m loving it, I can’t explain how much I’m loving it. I feel like it brings out my best attributes and I’m really enjoying it.”

It is clear that this new lease of life is bringing the best out of the 23-year-old and it’s bringing the best out of his team.

He’s started on the wide right position in the past four games in all competitions and the Rams have pieced together an impressive winning run.

What is next for Kane Wilson?

Although Wilson is performing well in his attacking position, he needs to start adding goal contributions to go with those performances.

He’s played 15 matches in League One and is yet to grab a goal or an assist, however, it’s a different story in the EFL Trophy.

The Englishman recorded an assist against Notts County and two in the win over Wolves U21s.

He’s flourished against a lower standard of opposition but the £5k-a-week gem now has to challenge himself to have more of an impact going forward in the third tier as Derby aim to gatecrash the automatic promotion places.
