Derby County goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith was ‘one of few players to come away with any credit’ after the 1-0 defeat to Shrewsbury Town.
The Rams unbeaten run of seven games in all competitions was ended on Saturday afternoon, with an own goal from midfielder Conor Hourihane being the difference at the Crowd Stadium.
Paul Warne’s side have now moved down to eleventh position in League One, finding themselves four points off the play-off places.
Journalist on keeper’s performance
Journalist for the Derby Telegraph, Leigh Curtis, rated Wildsmith as a 7/10 after the game, claiming he was one of Derby’s best players on the day.
“Made two saves to deny Max Mata and Carl Winchester and looked on with thanks as Tom Bayliss skied a penalty over the bar in the first half. Made a brilliant save from Udoh. Only one of a few players to come away with the game with any credit. 7.”
Wildsmith needs to keep form up for one reason
Wildsmith joined Derby in the summer of 2022, and has been a surprise as one of the Rams most consistent players, after some negative reviews at former club Sheffield Wednesday.
But the 27-year-old has established himself as Derby’s number one, even after the signing of Josh Vickers in the summer, who has provided more competition since his arrival.
Wildsmith has kept four clean sheets in 12 appearances in League One this season, even saving one penalty – he did not get the chance to save a second yesterday though, after Shrewsbury midfielder Tom Bayliss put his penalty over the bar at the end of the first half.
It will be important that Wildsmith keeps up his form though, with Derby once again struggling going forward.
