Paul Warne has been speaking ahead of Derby’s trip to Shrewsbury Town this weekend and insists unbeaten runs mean little to him.
Derby County have been in excellent form this season with seven games in a row unbeaten.
However, this is a record Paul Warne doesn’t care for, as he insists he would rather lose more and win more as opposed to drawing.
County face Shrewsbury on Saturday and Warne has warned his players that they’ll have to fight to keep their place in the team in what could be an eighth unbeaten game.
This comes after a double injury boost came midweek with both Callum Elder and Joe Ward returning.
Derby will need to become more ruthless in front of the goal to turn some of their draws into wins which is how Warne sees them improving.
Warne on Derby’s unbeaten run
Speaking to the Derby County club media before this weekend’s game, Warne explained why the unbeaten run doesn’t mean much.
“I don’t talk about unbeaten runs, really. To get promoted you have to have five, six or seven wins on the spin – that’s what separates teams in the league.
“Although draws are a positive point, I personally would rather lose more and win more. Points count at the end of the season, but if you have too many draws it’s no good.
“I don’t get too excited or carried away. If we were top then we’d think we were going OK here, but we feel a bit short on the current run. We need to be turning draws into wins.”
He has a point – Derby needs more wins and fewer draws
Despite a draw being a decent result in a lot of games, Derby simply has had too many.
In the last five league games, three have been draws with just two wins, this slightly takes away from the significance of going unbeaten.
The standings also show this, with a 10-point gap between the Rams and Portsmouth who sit top of the table.
Warne will be hoping his side pick up all three points on Saturday.
