Derby County manager Paul Warne has said that he is ‘frustrated’ by Derby’s lack of ruthlessness in front of goal.
The Rams have been in brilliant form in recent weeks, only losing once in their last eight games in League One, with two victories in the EFL Trophy in that time, most recently against Notts County.
With the international break coming to a close, Warne is now focusing on facing Shrewsbury Town on Saturday afternoon, and wants to make sure the players are scoring plenty of goals.
Manager on his frustration
Warne has bemoaned the lack of chances being put away, however, and calls on his squad to be more ruthless in front of goal.
“We’ve missed copious amounts of opportunities to score,” he told the club website.
“I think all the lads have to chip in for goals and not rely on just strikers. Our overall play has been really good but I don’t think we’ve been ruthless enough in the final third . The only time we’ve really felt we’ve done that is Blackpool. I’m really pleased with how the team have been, I’m just frustrated that the final little bit, we’ve had a dearth of goals.”
Warne is right
Whilst Derby have been in great form, there have not been as many goals as there should be.
The Rams have only scored 13 goals in eight games. Whilst that may seem like a lot, to put it into perspective, seven of those came in two games alone.
If things keep going the way they are, it’s only a matter of time before Derby’s lack of cutting edge going forward catches up with them.
So Warne is right to want to address this sooner rather than later, especially when results are going their way, with less pressure on him as manager. Warne has been criticised for this in recent weeks, which left former England international Carlton Palmer bemused.
