Peterborough United owner Darragh MacAnthony has sent a stark warning to Derby County and the other promotion challengers in League One, saying that their attacking options are ‘frightening’.
Posh are currently sitting in fifth place in League One, two places and four points clear of Derby in seventh.
The Rams have disappointed so far this season, with Paul Warne under pressure as Derby boss after a porr start which has been below expectations.
Darragh MacAnthony makes bold claim
Speaking on his The Hard Truth podcast, MacAnthony spoke about how Peterborough are now starting to ‘bury teams’ and why other team should be worried about them.
“We really are that team now who are starting to frighten the life out of the opposition. Teams want to just hit us on the break. It’s all about stopping us and not beating us – then we beat ourselves.
“We dominated the game against Wigan and, fair play, they took their two chances. It was one of them games where you weren’t massively angry, it was just like ‘we should have won that game comfortably’.
“It happens with a young team, so it was ‘let’s see how they respond on Saturday’. The unbeaten run ended on Tuesday, so let’s start another on Saturday.
“We’re now the joint highest scorers in League One. With the xG this was coming – the goals were coming.
“We were going to bury some teams and fair play to them all – fair play to the players.”
Derby should be worried
Derby should be worried by Posh’ start.
They have only lost one of their last eleven games in League One, although four of those have been draws.
Derby need to step up themselves if they want to mount a promotion charge. Goals have been a problem for a while so it looks like they will need to match Posh in that area if they are to keep up.
Former England international Carlton Palmer has said that Derby should look at signing Peterborough striker Jonson Clarke-Harris to bolster their attacking options in January.
