Non-league journalist delivers Ben Radcliffe verdict after Derby County loanee’s Gateshead debut

Ben Radcliffe left Derby County over the summer to join Gateshead Town on loan for the 2024/25 season.

Ben Radcliffe made the move to Pride Park during the 2023 summer transfer window, arriving from Burton Albion on a free transfer.

The centre-back spent time with the Rams’ U21s following the switch, making 10 appearances.

However, Radcliffe struggled to break into the first team under Paul Warne. He made just one EFL Trophy appearance last term, which lasted 11 minutes.

In League One, meanwhile, the 21-year-old was only included in the matchday squad on three occasions and did not make it off the bench.

As a result, with Derby County now back plying their trade in the Championship, it made sense for the stopper to go out on loan this season to try and earn more regular football and develop as a player.

Ben Radcliffe impressing on loan at Gateshead Town

Radcliffe has only been in the North East for a limited time but is already impressing with his new club.

Gateshead were in league action versus Barnet on September 7th and picked up a 2-0 win.

The Derby loanee did not start the match but came on to help see out the win and secure a clean sheet.

Following that clash, BBC Radio Newcastle’s Paul Dixon, who is an expert in non-league football, delivered his verdict on Radcliffe when speaking on Rams Daily: A Derby County Podcast.

He said: “He came on as a sub for Gateshead against Barnett.

“For the time he was on, he really made his mark. The headers that he needed to win, he was winning them unbelievably.

“He really impressed me with the leap that he’s got heading the ball. This lad really impressed me in how quick he was into the tackle as well.”

Derby County loan watch

Aside from Radcliffe, Derby have two more players out on loan for the 2024/25 season.

Tyrese Fornah joined the Rams from Nottingham Forest in August 2023. He featured 26 times during the club’s promotion-winning campaign and came off the bench for four minutes in their opening-day defeat to Blackburn Rovers.

But the 25-year-old has since joined League Two side Salford City for the remainder of the current campaign.

Fornah has started all four of Salford’s league fixtures this term, two of which they won and two of which they lost.

Elsewhere, Darren Robinson is also plying his trade in the National League after moving to Hartlepool United on a six-month deal.

Robinson has only managed to garner 49 minutes of league action for his new club so far though, being left on the bench or out of the squad in Hartlepool’s remaining four matches this season.
