Future Derby County player Wayne Rooney told the Washington Post last February how DC United’s Luciano Acosta is one of the best players he has played with.

Acosta has recently come to the attention of many Rams fans.

The attacking midfielder told Argentine radio (translated by derbycounty.news) how Wayne Rooney has asked him to join Derby in the January transfer window.

Acosta is out of contract with DC United, and he is set to leave in December.

Rooney is a fan of his former teammate, and he believes Acosta can still play for a top club one day after a move to Paris Saint-Germain fell through earlier this year.

He needs to keep motivated [after missing out on joining PSG]. He now knows what kind of teams are interested in him. If he continues performing up to his ability, he will get there. He’s young and he’s talented — one of the best I’ve played with.

Acosta came through the youth ranks at Boca Juniors. The Argentine playmaker went on to join DC United, becoming a hit in Washington alongside Rooney.

The 25-year-old has netted 21 goals in 95 games for the MLS club.

His proposed move to PSG reportedly collapsed at the final stages after completing a medical. It no doubt affected Acosta’s form for the remainder of 2019.

Derby will benefit greatly from Rooney’s arrival in January. If they can add Acosta to the mix, their forward line could easily be a match for any other Championship side.
