Paul Warne compares Derby County ace to Ryan Gravenberch, he could embarrass his transfer fee

Over the course of the summer, Derby County completed a huge turnover of players to assist with their transfer business.

While plenty of stars who helped the side earn promotion from League One to the Championship left, some new names were brought in.

Paul Warne had to focus on landing a new goalkeeper, a brand new midfield and a few forward options for the step-up.

So far, Derby have competed well in the second tier, picking up some statement wins alongside a few inconsistent performances.

In that time, most of the new signings have settled well into life at Pride Park, including Kenzo Goudmijn, who has come in for some big praise from Warne.

Kenzo Goudmijn compared to Ryan Gravenberch in Derby discussion

One debate that swirls around Goudmijn in the early days of his time at Derby surrounds his best position on the pitch.

The Dutch midfielder has played everywhere in the central areas of the field, flickering between playing as a deep-lying option to the number ten and then back to a mix between the two.

The most recent game, a draw with Oxford United, saw Goudmijn sit a bit deeper while Ebou Adams was pushed further on to help nullify the opposition.

Discussing the best position for the midfielder, Warne told BBC Radio Derby: “It’s a weird one with him [Kenzo Goudmijn], because his best position possibly is like an aggressive eight or a ten because he has the pass in the final position of the pitch.

“However, if you’re playing out from the back, he’s also the most reliable to get it off the centre-halves and be the deep-lying six.

“So I think it depends on what the opposition is… I would like to have two Kenzos, that would help no end. But I think his best position, and it will become his best position, I think he will become an eight.

“I think as the season gets on and he has more time with us, like he’s 22, and hopefully he’s here for many years and I think the fitter and stronger he gets playing English football can only be a good thing and it will allow him to be like a, it sounds a big exaggeration possibly, but that Liverpool midfield I really like, that [Ryan] Gravenberch.

“I think he can be the one that can pick it up from the backline but also be on the edge of the box when you get it up the other end. It’s just too much to ask of him currently.”

It underlines the high hopes for the 22-year-old at the club, with the aim of turning him into that player who can do it all.

Kenzo Goudmijn could embarrass his transfer fee

Goudmijn cost just a reported transfer fee of £690,000 to sign from AZ Alkmaar, which could prove to be an absolute snip.

Given his current ability to run games, especially at home, the youngster is already showing all the signs of an impressive technical player.

Throw in some room to develop, some natural promise and more time in the Championship and there’s a player there that could be worth many times his initial transfer fee.

With the type of competition Derby face in the second tier, the midfielder is the exact type of signing the Rams will have to make more of.

Landing those players that are undervalued and could rise even more in the years ahead is where success can be found.

It won’t be easy, it will take time, but Goudmijn is the first of many signings the club will be looking to make in that way.

It remains to be seen whether that can be done, but Warne seems at least hopeful that the Dutch summer addition is a successful one so far.
