Derby County manager Paul Warne has said that his time as manager of Derby has been ‘a bit harder than anticipated’.
Warne has received a lot of criticism in recent matches for the Rams recent performances, particularly on Saturday afternoon following their 1-0 defeat away at Shrewsbury Town, with an own goal from Conor Hourihane being the decider.
Derby job has been harder for Warne than he expected
Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Derby’s clash at home to Exeter City on Tuesday night, Warne said that was expecting the job to be a bit easier for him than it has been.
“I’d like to say I’d come in on a horse with a magic stick and just get 40 wins, but it hasn’t been the case,” Warne told the BBC.
“It has probably been a bit harder than I anticipated.
“There have been really good signs, but Saturday really pulled the curtain back a little bit and I thought we are probably a little bit further off than I’d like to be.
“I don’t think we are in a bad spot. If we scored in the last minute and got a point at the weekend it wouldn’t feel so dramatic.
“And its not the lads’ fault, but when they are the pre-season favourites to win the title, it comes with something and when you lose a game it is a bigger catastrophe. And no-one feels it greater than me.”
Things need to improve – and fast
Derby were favourites for promotion before the season started, as they looked to build on their seventh placed finish from last season, narrowly missing out on the playoffs on the final day.
After some impressive summer recruitment, confidence was high, but after 12 games, the Rams are sat in 11th, four points off of the playoffs.
Warne has been under increased pressure from the Rams faithful, and if performances carry on the way they are, it could only be a matter of time before Warne’s time is up.
