Derby County manager Phillip Cocu has confirmed that Tom Huddlestone has a serious injury and he isn’t anticipating the midfielder back anytime soon, RamsTV report.

The midfielder was having a decent game at Oakwell, and he put the Rams 2-1 up from the penalty spot. However, in doing so, he seemingly pulled up.

Huddlestone signalled immediately to the bench, and he was consequently replaced. After further examinations, Cocu now confirms he will be out for quite some time.

I think we can say he will be out for quite some time. I don’t like to say how many months because we still have to wait for medical advice of the exact injury he has. But it doesn’t look like he will be back in a few weeks. Unfortunately, it is [serious].

Huddlestone had been a key fixture in Derby’s midfield this season. The former Hull City man had started every Championship game for the Rams under Phillip Cocu.

The Rams boss was subsequently forced into making changes against Luton Town, with Duane Holmes also restricted to a place on the bench through illness.

Krystian Bielik and Graeme Shinnie started as Derby’s midfield two, and they impressed. Shinnie, especially, put in a man of the match display in the 2-0 win for the Rams.

Huddlestone’s injury is a setback for the player. However, it creates an opportunity for Shinnie to break into the Derby XI and he grabbed his opportunity with both hands.
