Derby County claimed a huge 1-0 win over Middlesbrough in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.

Derby County played their first home league game of the 2024/25 season on Saturday, welcoming Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough to Pride Park.

Despite a tough start to the campaign, Rams fans went into the game with high spirits, after Derby County announced the signing of Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.

The Swedish shot-stopper becomes the ninth summer signing at Derby County, and he watched from the bench as his new team took an unexpected lead vs Boro.

Derby hit Middlesbrough with a devastating counter-attack, with Kayden Jackson running half the length of the pitch towards Boro goalkeeper Seny Dieng, rounding him, and scoring his second goal since joining the Rams.

The second half saw Derby County do a lot of defending as Boro sought a way back into the game, but the Rams held on for a huge win.

Derby County suffer double injury blow vs Middlesbrough

A solid first half performance was dampened by a double injury blow for Paul Warne.

He was forced to bring off both Eiran Cashin and Kane Wilson before the break.

Cashin suffered a head injury but was visibly frustrated at the club doctor’s decision to withdraw him from the game, whilst Wilson looked devastated as he nursed what looked like a hamstring injury.

Whilst losing both of them was a blow for Derby County in their game vs Boro, it’s not the end of the world for Warne.

Paul Warne won’t lose too much sleep over Cashin and Wilson injuries at Derby County

Cashin is a key player in the first-team, and thankfully, his injury doesn’t appear too serious, given the fact that he was eager to get back on the pitch and frustrated when he couldn’t.

Wilson’s injury may be more serious, though. But Warne was able to bring on Ryan Nyambe who many deem to be the better fit in a back-four.

Should Wilson now spend some time on the sidelines, Nyambe will be gunning to take his chance and assert his place in the starting XI.

Keeping competition rife is going to be key for Derby in remaining competitive as a team in general this season.

Up next for Derby County is a trip to Watford in the Championship next Saturday, in their first 3pm kick off of the campaign.
