Derby County have been told that a Championship star is ‘keen’ to join them this month.
Derby County have made their intentions to bolster their attack this month very clear, having already extended the loan spell of Tyreece John-Jules and signed Corey Blackett-Taylor.
The Rams remain in the market for a new striker though and are thought to have been keeping an eye on Michael Smith for a while now.
The ‘game-changer’ has 34 goals to his name in his past two League One campaigns, while he has also won promotion to the Championship on three occasions.
While also struggling with injuries, Smith has fallen down the pecking order at Sheffield Wednesday and could be on his way out.
Reports this week have claimed that Derby have already made a loan bid for the striker, while they are also willing to contribute to his wages.
However, it was claimed that The Owls are demanding an ‘excessive’ fee on top of his salary.
While it’s unclear whether Paul Warne’s side are prepared to meet their demands, it is now believed that Smith could push for an exit and is likely to get a loan deal over the line.
Journalist Darren Witcoop has claimed that Smith is ‘keen’ to move to Pride Park, while he believes a deal ‘gets done’ before next week’s deadline.
How can Michael Smith benefit Derby County?
Michael Smith would add another 30+ star to Derby County’s ranks, but his experience in League One can’t go ignored.
The veteran has 75 goals and 29 assists in his career in the third tier, while he knows exactly how to finish a season strongly and win promotion.
Given how Derby went off to the boil in the second half of last season, Smith’s experience could be extremely beneficial this time round.

James Collins has been ‘so important’ for The Rams this term and will no doubt continue that role, but Smith can add something different if needed and will also covered for the injured Conor Washington and Martyn Waghorn.
If Derby can now keep hold of their key players such as Eiran Cashin, Max Bird and Louie Sibley, then they will be all kitted out for one big push towards the finish line. It’s not just promotion that they are targeting now, a potential title challenge is on the cards.
