According to the Glasgow Times, Derby County and Nottingham Forest target Jacob Murphy wants to join Rangers on loan from Newcastle United this summer.

Murphy joined Newcastle from Norwich City for £12 million in 2017.

But despite a brief spell as a regular under former manager Rafa Benitez, the former Canaries winger has struggled to make an impact with the Magpies.

Murphy spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, posting nine goals in 24 games.

A report last month by TEAMtalk claimed a host of Championship teams, including Derby, Forest and the Owls, were keen to sign him on loan for the season.

But the latest reports from north of the border now say Murphy has set his sights on a move to another suitor in Scottish Premiership title challengers Rangers.

The Gers have started the season on fire, breaking a record for successive clean sheets.

Steven Gerrard’s side currently top the table as they look to end Celtic’s stranglehold on Scottish football, and they seemingly still want to strengthen before the deadline.

Rangers represent an interesting option right now with the Ibrox club also in Europe.

Newcastle are said to want Murphy to remain at St James’ Park to fight for a place, but he was left out of their opening day squad for the trip to West Ham United.

Surely Murphy will want regular first-team football this season, with east Midlands duo Derby and Forest offering just that as both clubs struggle with quality options out wide.

The Rams kicked off their Championship campaign with a 2-0 home defeat to Reading, while the Reds fell to a same score-line defeat at Queens Park Rangers.

Derby must look at bringing in one or two wide players before the transfer deadline. If not, it’s difficult to see Phillip Cocu’s side mounting a playoff challenge.
