According to The Scottish Sun, Newcastle United are scouting reported Derby County and Stoke City striker target Sam Cosgrove ahead of the January transfer window.

The Aberdeen striker has caught the attention after netting 23 goals last term.

Cosgrove broke an Aberdeen scoring record dating back to the 70s prior to the global health pandemic putting an end to the Scottish Premiership campaign early.

According to the Evening Express, Derby and Stoke scouted him earlier this year.

In the summer, French club Guingamp saw a surprise £2.7 million offer for him accepted by the Dons. Cosgrove, however, opted against joining the Ligue 1 side.

Now, Newcastle are the latest to join the list of clubs keen on him.

The Scottish Sun claim the Magpies have scouted him as Steve Bruce weighs up moving for him in January, identifying Cosgrove as a long-term replacement for Andy Carroll.

The former Carlisle United striker is predominantly a target man. Standing at 6ft 2inch, he is strong, good in the air and brings others into play aside from his goal scoring ability.

Aberdeen signed the 24-year-old for a bargain £25,000 almost three years ago.

The Scottish Premiership side stand to make a decent profit in the event of a sale. However, it remains to be seen how determined the Dons will be to keep him in January.

Newcastle have Joelinton, Callum Wilson, Dwight Gayle and Carroll for striker options. Stoke, on the other hand, have Steven Fletcher and Lee Gregory as similar types.

Derby, meanwhile, are desperate for a new striker. The Rams saw Chris Martin depart in the summer and the Scotland international has left a huge void at the club.

A new striker should be a top priority for Derby in January. Cosgrove fits the bill, but the Rams may now have missed the boat amid Premier League interest.
