Derby County are chasing a Premier League midfielder in the January transfer window.
Derby County face losing a number of key stars this month, with Max Bird continuing to be heavily linked with a move to the Championship after failing to secure a summer switch.
Louie Sibley may also be a player that could leave The Rams’ pretty light in midfield if he is to depart, resulting in the club’s search for a new addition in the middle of the park.
It hasn’t taken Derby long to find their next target either, with journalist Darren Witcoop reporting that the Midlands outfit are one of a ‘number of League One clubs’ chasing Conor Coventry.
Conor Coventry has spent the last 14 years with West Ham but has been restricted to very few first team games. The 23-year-old has made ten appearances for the club, including three as the Irons lifted the Europa Conference League trophy last season.
The ‘exciting’ midfielder has also enjoyed four recent loan spells, spending time with Lincoln City, Peterborough United, MK Dons and Rotherham United.
Coventry’s contract with West Ham is set to expire in the summer and so the London club could look to offload him for a fee this month, though he is likely to be available on the cheap.
Derby aren’t alone in their pursuit though, with Peterborough also reportedly eager to re-sign him, while Charlton Athletic have been linked as well.
The Rams and Posh’s position in the League One table surely make the two of them the more tempting of the moves in January, though Coventry may look to join The Addicks if he wants to stay closer to home. Derby are certainly at a disadvantage if their target is hopeful of remaining in the south.
Would Conor Coventry be a quality signing?
Conor Coventry would certainly be a solid bargain for Derby County if they could land him, with the 23-year-old already picking up plenty of first team experience across the EFL.
The midfielder played three times in the Europa Conference League group stages, while he also made a brief cameo against Man City in the Premier League, as well as being named a regular in the Championship for Rotherham last term.
He could be a great addition of Max Bird was to leave, though supporters will obviously hope they can keep hold of their academy graduate for a while longer.
