A former Derby County player is set to finally get a move this summer after leaving Pride Park.

Derby County and Paul Warne had to deal with several players leaving this summer, many of which were crucial as part of the side that finally managed promotion back to the Championship.

The Rams lost the likes of Conor Hourihane and Korey Smith in the centre-of-the-park, however they have done brilliantly well to replace them with the likes of Kenzo Goudmijn and David Ozoh coming in, both of which have enjoyed brilliant starts to their time at Pride Park.

Derby County also lost two notable strikers in Martyn Waghorn and Dwight Gayle, with both leaving as free agents following the conclusions of their contracts at the club.

The pair were recently part of a PFA Free Agent side that took on Cambridge United in a friendly, and following the clash, one of them has managed to earn a move to the Scottish Premiership.

Former Derby County striker Dwight Gayle ‘set to sign’ for Hibernian

Free agent Gayle has been looking to waste no time to find his next club for the 2024/25 season, with him at one point featuring for Stockport County in a pre-season friendly.

However, he has looked upland towards the Scottish Premiership for his next move as he is now ‘set to sign for Hibernian’, per Graeme Bailey on X.

34-year-old Gayle managed just six games for Derby County, however he was able to bag three times in the league, therefore playing a crucial role in the Rams’ promotion back to the Championship.

Dwight Gayle’s injuries ruined any prospect of an extra season at Pride Park

It didn’t take Gayle long to hit his stride at Derby County after he joined the club in January 2024 on a six-month contract.

It only took him two starts to get on the scoresheet for the Rams, and he would go on to score in a further two consecutive games, whilst also notching an assist in the home victory against Reading.

Gayle played a very important role in turning around Derby County’s fortunes as the Rams sat sixth in the league before the former Newcastle United and Crystal Palace bagsman managed his first goal.

Whilst he was in such brilliant form, he was incredibly unlucky to be hit with an untimely hamstring injury, which as a result ended his season and his time at Derby County prematurely.

There is no doubt that Gayle could have continued with his run of form, and if that would have been the case, it would have been likely that he could have played a part for Warne’s side in the Championship.
